Possible asbestos on a demolition site — stop until it is proven clear

Possible asbestos stays possible until a written test says otherwise. An owner’s word, a visual guess, or ‘it looks like foam’ is not a test.

The rule

Stop. Keep people out of that room. Get a test in writing. Then decide. Covering it and working around it is not the same as a result.

Known vs assumed

• Known: a written test result in the job folder, with a name and a date.
• Assumed: an old survey you cannot find.
• Assumed: ‘the last contractor said it was foam.’
• Not a test: opening the plant room to see.

Checklist

• Hold written on the room or material.
• Who is kept out — written.
• Test asked for — written.
• Result filed with custody (who filed, who confirmed).
• Only then: work in that room, or keep the hold.
