Vibration, noise, dust

Write the neighbour limit before the first hit. We do not sell a blast recipe.

Study notes. Not a certificate. Not a licence. Not NEBOSH, PESO, ISEE, or IDE. We never design the charge, spacing, or the cut. Site hours and statutory papers have no video substitute.

  1. Wave types and propagation; near vs far field.

Near field and far field behave differently. Know which receptor you are protecting.

  2. PPV, frequency content, and why frequency matters as much as amplitude.

Amplitude without frequency is half a story. Write the standard that applies at this receptor.

  3. Scaled-distance laws — square-root (blast) vs cube-root (airblast); K and b; why a monitored trial blast beats any published constant.

A copied K and b from another city is assumed. A monitored trial at this site is a measurement.

  4. Standards: DIN 4150-3, BS 7385-2, USBM RI 8507, and the local limit that actually applies.

Name the limit that applies here. Do not paste a table from a different country onto this neighbour.

  5. Airblast/overpressure: dBL, the 133 dBL screening limit, window-breakage thresholds (~169 dBL), and confinement.

Airblast is not ground vibration. Windows care about dBL.

  6. Impact/touchdown vibration from the collapse itself — a different mechanism from the detonation, and often the bigger one.

The building hitting the ground is often the vibration neighbours feel. It is not a blast recipe.

  7. Instrumentation: geophones, sound level meters, triggers, ranges. Know your instrument's floor and ceiling — it decides what "not recorded" means.

Know the floor and ceiling of the box you brought. A silent trace can mean the instrument was deaf.

  8. Monitoring programme design: receptor selection, station siting, pre-condition surveys, crack gauges, tiltmeters.

Receptors, stations, crack gauges, a pre-condition survey. After the complaint is too late.

  9. Dust: generation, suppression, monitoring, PM standards.

Water at the tool, wind, neighbours. Suppression is a method line, not a hope.

  10. Noise: BS 5228, LAeq, working-hour limits, community expectations.

Hours, LAeq, who is next door. Write the limit and the expectation.
